Banyan Senior Living was established in 1987 to specialize in providing housing and other services to senior adults. The founder, Ken Bolt, developed a team capability that was advanced in both strategy and implementation at a time when the independent and assisted living business was still in its infancy. Ken immediately saw the positive impact of a continuum of care and, from the outset, established relationships with sponsors to develop integrated services for seniors.

The company's geographic influence has been widespread with the majority of projects located in the southeastern states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida and Virginia.
